Minutes of Old Tuam Society AGM (26th of January, 2012)
The AGM of the Old Tuam Society took place on Thursday last (26/01/12) in the Town Hall and as the Society entered its seventh decade it also elected its first female president, Anne Tierney. In his outgoing address, President Pat O’Hora thanked the Society's Officers and Committee for their hard work during the year, and wished the incoming president well for her forthcoming term. He also mentioned in his address that he was heartened by the number of new young members who were present at the meeting, and expressed his concern that recent infrastructural development has eroded some of the invaluable architectural heritage of Tuam.
The meeting then elected the committee for 2012. The following were selected: President: Anne Tierney, Vice President: Aíne Carney, Secretary: Denny Hannon, Treasurer: Michael O’Neill, Committee: Tony Claffey, Margaret Connolly, Brendan Higgins, Kay Jennings, Liam Kelly, Bernie King, Maurice Laheen, Noel McCann, Frank Mahon, Willie Mannion, Gabriel O'Connor, Ruairí Ó hAodha, Pat O'Hora and Anne Rodda.
In her opening address to the Society as president, Anne Tierney outlined the program of lectures for 2012 and also gave details of a conference that will take place in July in Tuam, entitled “The Irish-American Link: People, Place and Culture”. The conference will be co-hosted with Galway County Council, Drew University, (New Jersey, USA), Department of Irish Studies, N.U.I.G., and Galway County Heritage Forum. The conference will explore historic connections between the West of Ireland and America and will focus on historical figures, emigration, genealogy, history and culture.
The conference will be held from 12th to 16th July 2012 in the Ard Rí House Hotel, Tuam. Further details will follow shortly.
Under AOB several members expressed unease over the current situation with the new roads and wondered what was going to happen to the Miller's Cottage, which sits over the eye of the bridge where the Nanny emerges from under “Garvey’s yard”, where now only the front wall to roof level remains. It was agreed to make representations to the appropriate authorities about this.
