April Lecture - History and Archaeology of Children’s Burial Grounds
The Old Tuam Society's 2012/13 lecture series continues this April with a lecture which coincides with our upcoming project on Children's Burial Grounds in Tuam parish. Declan Kelly has successfully completed the M.A. in Landscape Archaeology at NUI Galway. The focus of Declan’s fieldwork was the Children’s Burial Grounds of the South East Galway parishes of Killeenadeema/Aille and Ballinakill/Derrybrien.
This lecture will examine the setting of these monuments in the landscape with a view to shedding light on how they were regarded in the community. During his research, Declan interviewed older members of the community to collect their memories of the many hidden sites.
Declan Kelly is the former archivist for the diocese of Clonfert.
