This event will bring together expert archaeologists to discuss the significance of the medieval Romanesque monuments in Tuam such as the high cross and chancel arch as well as the recently completed digital project itself. The panel discussion will take place in St Mary's Cathedral under the gaze of the cross and arch. The digital project was made possible by a Community Monument Fund grant from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. </span></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Our guest panel will include Chris Corlett from the National Monuments Service, archaeologist Dr Christy Cunniffe and Gary Dempsey (Digital Heritage Age, who carried out the digitisation process).</span></span></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRgOxprn1m_tvg8LdlPT6Jv3-b91epUD58zNHcGoJ9nr2OwIuO1Q70iTCdyfDM7z3YrMhxzvYJJaUmOqEi-XT6ooKvmNHtclwngvoplPLuaqyrdjatqANZDR2-1w9MIoKAiicToV3tikb9vKrS18O8L5eqYB_VpOlK0Q1ixLeLJlSmAXMUEJGSzOc/s3508/Old%20Tuam%20Society%20poster%20high%20cross%20Oct%202022_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3508" data-original-width="2479" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRgOxprn1m_tvg8LdlPT6Jv3-b91epUD58zNHcGoJ9nr2OwIuO1Q70iTCdyfDM7z3YrMhxzvYJJaUmOqEi-XT6ooKvmNHtclwngvoplPLuaqyrdjatqANZDR2-1w9MIoKAiicToV3tikb9vKrS18O8L5eqYB_VpOlK0Q1ixLeLJlSmAXMUEJGSzOc/w283-h400/Old%20Tuam%20Society%20poster%20high%20cross%20Oct%202022_001.jpg" width="283" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;">This event will take place Friday, 7 October </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica; text-align: left;">at 8 pm in St Mary's Cathedral, High Street, Tuam.</span></div><p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: helvetica;">All Welcome</span></p>The Old Tuam Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15891653460906527282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8238304462184201976.post-50359715911274818822022-08-24T12:40:00.006+01:002022-08-24T14:18:16.063+01:00Digitising the Medieval Monuments of Tuam Project Now Online<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><span style="text-align: justify;">The Old Tuam Society is delighted
to announce the online release of our ‘Digitising the Medieval Monuments of
Tuam’ project. The project was made possible by a Community Monument Fund grant
from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage By making digital
3D models of a number of artefacts in St. Mary’s Cathedral freely available online,
we aim to improve the visitor experience and allow greater detail of the stone
carvings to be seen. We hope that by highlighting and displaying these medieval
treasures in a modern context, it will spark renewed interest and local pride.</span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">High Crosses are probably the
most iconic monuments of medieval Ireland. High crosses had a range of
different functions; they marked sanctuary boundaries in major ecclesiastical
settlements, they offered pilgrims intricate images of biblical scenes, which
were likely brightly painted and they were focal points of pilgrimage,
devotion, prayer and preaching. Later crosses became associated with markets
and fairs conducted under their munificent gaze. The Gaelic Monastic market
town of Tuam is fortunate that parts at least four high crosses from the 12th
century have been discovered, indicating the significance of Tuam’s ecclesiastic
status. Other artefacts digitised in this project include the magnificent
Romanesque chancel arch as well as two parts of other crosses housed in the beautiful
surroundings of St Mary’s Cathedral, Tuam.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">As part of our project we also produced
a “Making of“ video, explaining the process of making the 3D models and the
significance. We are very grateful to Gary Dempsey, Creative Director of
Digital Heritage Age for his expertise in carrying out the photogrammetry work,
modelling and video production. We are also grateful to Galway County Council,
Marie Mannion (Heritage Officer) and Bernie Doherty (Archaeologist) for their
generous help and advice with the project and funding application. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oaqPO9_qY6k" width="320" youtube-src-id="oaqPO9_qY6k"></iframe></span></div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">The Old Tuam Society hopes that by
highlighting the medieval treasures in St. Mary’s Cathedral with this project,
it will spark new research and interest and improve the visitor experience. We
will be following up this digital launch with an event in early October to
celebrate the project and to discuss the importance of the Tuam Cross in an
Irish context.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

While the Treaty would lead to a split in the Sinn Féin party, and ultimately, civil war, in the initial days and weeks after 6 December, politicians, public figures and the people of Tuam and north Galway discussed, debated and took positions on the document. Examining the measure of sovereignty offered and the arguments made by both sides from a local perspective, this lecture will examine reactions in Tuam and the views of the TDs for the area like Joseph B. We would like to express our gratitude to all our authors for sending in articles early so it hits the shelves earlier than usual. This year's edition runs to 116 pages of historic Tuam content.</span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As always we have an eclectic range of articles, with a strong cultural flavour, covering, art, music, film, sculpture, iconography, heraldry and architecture. There is also plenty for those with an interest in genealogy and military history. </span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Special mention needs to be made on this centenary year as we recall the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 and the subsequent Civil War. The local dimension of that pivotal period is recounted in JOTS18, by Dr Jarlath Deignan and a companion piece by Midie Corcoran draws our attention to an interesting wedding photograph taken on the eve of the Civil War and the role of a member of his own family in those grave times.</span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.2; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSN8UVdzdxKmQ5TJR34x7NyHR5iVqjWrpItwAJTHsYTw8HDkhLMyoqwi4Ss1SnrJiYLEYrz_vUqweJVlTT-Zhb8jtGGDn-f7dBzEPaX_xmALClfF36Q6_jjAzOtu23EEjU_KGf-iEowak/s842/JOTS+18+2021+Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="842" data-original-width="595" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSN8UVdzdxKmQ5TJR34x7NyHR5iVqjWrpItwAJTHsYTw8HDkhLMyoqwi4Ss1SnrJiYLEYrz_vUqweJVlTT-Zhb8jtGGDn-f7dBzEPaX_xmALClfF36Q6_jjAzOtu23EEjU_KGf-iEowak/w255-h362/JOTS+18+2021+Cover.jpg" width="255" /></a></span></div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span><p></p><div style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><p style="color: #1c1e21; display: inline; margin: 6px 0px 0px;">JOTS will be on sale in our usual stockists: Centra Dublin Rd; Quinn's, SuperValu, and Sharkey's Bishop St; Joyce's Supermarket Abbey Trinity Road; Maxol Service Station, Church View from today. In a challenging year, we were fortunate that so many authors sent articles in good time so we were able to get the journal completed in record time and so it hits the shelves earlier than usual. </span><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="color: #1c1e21; font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: white;">Sadly we can't hold our usual launch event due to Covid restrictions but hopefully the early arrival of JOTS17 will compensate. Amazingly this edition has over 120 pages while JOTS1 had 64; not bad for a 17th edition. A 2 page article will appear in the Tuam Herald prior to the launch to look back over the past 16 editions and preview JOTS17.</span></span></div><div><p style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; display: inline; margin: 6px 0px 0px;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><br /></span></p></div><div><p style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; display: inline; margin: 6px 0px 0px;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyWnzytilXPyUcCvusboI6PlnOFxJpJwmVPEHr1pvXFqq01cmAzGkKvruKNMCozbl_5zrcOetWNv96MNphWyQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><br /><p></p></div><div><p style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; display: inline; margin: 6px 0px 0px;"><span style="font-family: verdana;">JOTS will be on sale in our usual stockists: Centra Dublin Rd; Quinn's, Supervalu, and Sharkey's Bishop St; Joyce's Supermarket Abbey Trinity Road; Maxol Service Station, Church View from Saturday morning. <span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In view of the ongoing uncertainty in relation to the Covid-19 virus and the need to reduce community exposure we have taken the decision to cancel our planned March lecture on the Connaught Rangers mutiny in India. Hopefully when the situation improves we will have an opportunity to reschedule.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1c1e21; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">It’s that time of year again! </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">The sixteenth edition of JOTS, the Journal of the Old Tuam Society will be officially launched Friday, 29th November at the Corralea Court Hotel at 8 pm. This year’s volume will be launched by Dr Paul McNulty. Paul is a long-time friend and visitor to Tuam. An emeritus of the Department of Engineering at UCD, he has most recently turned his attention to the histor</span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">y and culture of the west of Ireland, publishing many new works, including ‘The Genealogy of the Anglo-Norman Lynches who settled in Galway’ and a moving novel based around the lives of those caught up in the trauma of the notorious Bodkin Murders of 1741.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Coincidentally, JOTS 16 includes a fresh and fascinating look at the Bodkin Murders, along with a wide and eclectic mix of articles and photos from new contributors that will interest all. There is a strong focus this year on a number of prominent Tuam families and their contribution to the business life of the town, including two beautifully illustrated articles on the lives of publican Tommy Joyce, and of Tuam Star’s hero John C. McHugh, whose life was tragically cut short on a hurling pitch in Philadelphia in the 1950s. There are unique studies too on the area’s vibrant cricket scene of a century ago, a reflection on the surviving art of Temple Jarlath, a reminder of the town’s victim of the Lusitania disaster and a look at the elusive Freemasons and their contribution to local life.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">It goes without saying that JOTS 16 will make a fabulous stocking-filler for all those, here at home or further afield, interested in the history and heritage of Tuam and district. Hope to see you all there. Fáilte roimh chách!</span></div>

the experience of local men fighting the Great War, the arrest of Sean
MacDiarmada at an anti-recruitment rally in Tuam in 1915, and the participation
of Volunteers from North Galway in the 1916 Rising, are also detailed. Lesser
known events too are chronicled; among them the boycott against Belfast goods initiated
by Tuam traders and the </span></span><span style="mso-bookmark: _Hlk20078943;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">evacuation of Crown
forces from barracks in the region following ratification of the Treaty<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: #333333;">Damien's area of specialist research
is Irishmen who served in the British Army and he previously delivered
excellent and thought-provoking lectures to the Society. Damien's M. Litt,
entitled 'T<i>he Connaught Rangers and the Wars of Empire 1793-1922</i>' is a survey
of one Irish regiment's experience and involvement in imperial conflicts. In
addition, Damien curated ‘Galway and The Wars of Empire’
for the Galway City Museum which examined the involvement of Galway men and
women in the Wars of Empire between 1796 and 1922. Damien is currently editing
"<i>The Connaught Rangers and the Wars of Empire 1793-1922</i>" for

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The OTS is delighted to announce details of our May lecture coming up next Thursday, 16 May in Tuam Library at 8 pm. Our guest lecturer Martin Curley has been very involved in genealogical
research and local history since returning to Galway in 2013. A native of
Guilka, Menough, he has lived in NYC and Liverpool and was involved for many
years in emigrant groups. He is also the organiser of the Galway Genetic
Genealogy Conference and administers several DNA Facebook groups including the
Tuam, Mountbellew and Clonbern-Kilkerrin groups as well as Facebook
groups for the Mannion and Donnellan clans. He also works with schools and
community groups delivering workshops on Family History and Local Heritage as
well as helping families and individuals trace their roots and relations
through records and DNA.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The genesis of the Tuam Orphan Girls Project came about on
discovering an 1849 <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Tuam Herald</i>
report of the Board of Guardians for the Tuam Union where the Australian
authorities detailed the condition of girls who had been residents of Tuam
Workhouse a year after leaving Tuam for a better life in Australia. Martin has
worked in the very successful Mountbellew-Palestine Orphan Girls Project where
descendants were invited to return to Mountbellew where their ancestors had
left in 1852. This work meant that some descendants were able to meet their
Irish cousins and Martin hopes a similar project would be helpful for Tuam. He
is hoping that by pooling the resources and talents of people in Australia and
Ireland to help that it would make this possible.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="background: white; color: #333333;">The Old Tuam Society's lecture series for the
2018-19 season resumes this February 21st and we are delighted to welcome
author </span><span style="background: white; color: #212121;"><span style="text-align: start;">Jane Stanford
who will be speaking about her ancestor </span></span>John
O’Connor Power.<span style="background: white; color: #333333;"> Jane's lecture entitled "Ireland's
Napoleon" will detail Power's life as </span>a Home Ruler, a
Member for Mayo (1874-1885), a journalist and a Fenian through his prominent
role in the Supreme Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was
considered a formidable political strategist and made himself welcome in
Westminster’s corridors of power and London society. Indeed, his cunning and
intellect were such that he was an inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle in creating Sherlock Holmes' nemesis Professor Moriarty; a seditious
Irishman with ‘<i>hereditary tendencies of the most diabolical kind</i>'.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">As the Supreme Council’s ‘accredited agent’, he advised successive
British governments on land legislation, local government reform and electoral
policy. He harnessed the influence of the diaspora, the Irish in England and
the Empire and its ex-colonies and demanded justice for Ireland. Considered one
of the outstanding orators of the time, he was ranked with Gladstone and John
Bright.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Aged 25, he furthered his education at St. Jarlath's College,
Tuam, with his fees and expenses paid by a combination of teaching and lectures
in Britain and America. In his final year he was Professor of Humanities at St.
Jarlaths.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Our speaker, Jane Stanford, is author of ‘<i>Moriarty
Unmasked: Conan Doyle and an Anglo-Irish Quarrel</i>’, (Carrowmore, 2017) and ‘<i>That
Irishman</i>: <i>the life and times of John O’Connor Power</i>’, (History
Press Ireland, 2011).</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Over the
course of the day there will be 6 very informative and varied lectures. Mary
Clancy, will provide an insight into <i>Local Politics and Women's
Suffrage: Women in Rural Galway. </i><span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">This
lecture will </span></span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">examine
women’s suffrage campaigning in rural Galway in the context of the existing
public visibility of women, especially in poor law and local politics. It will
consider how life-stories of forgotten pioneering women throw light on forms of
political power associated with the daily lives of women, children and the
destitute. It will also consider the place of well-known local public figures,
such as Edith Drury (Eibhlín Ní Choisdealbha), Alice Perry and Ada English.
Finally, the talk will discuss how the women’s suffrage campaign was able to operate
in rural areas through the work of visiting speakers.<i><span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"><o:p></o:p></span></i></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Geraldine Curtin will then speak about, <i>Dealers,
dressmakers and secret agents: </i></span></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Women prisoners in Galway, 1917-1921</span></i><span style="font-size: 12pt;">. </span></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Geraldine </span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">will present the story of </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Winifred O’Brien,
a young English woman, incarcerated<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>in Galway Gaol as a political prisoner in
1920. Winifred’s occupation is recorded in<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>the gaol register as ‘Journalist and
secret service agent’. She was one of a number of women who were in the gaol
between 1917 and 1921. Geraldine will look at both political and non-political
women prisoners<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;">
</span>in Galway in this period, their crimes and punishments, and their<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>treatment
while in gaol.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The title of Mary J. Murphy’s lecture is “I am a
Galway woman!” Maureen (<i>née </i>McHugh) O’Carroll T.D.<b><i> </i></b></span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Mary J will
examine Maureen’s roots in the north Galway parish of<b><i> </i></b>Caherlistrane
where her father was born in 1873. It will explore how<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>her devotion to him - and to his home place
- was vitally influential in her own evolution as a politician. Maureen’s
‘public’ life has been well documented but little is known about her Galway
story, or her Gaelic League activist journalist father and 1916 combatant,
Michael<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>McHugh,
who died when she was eleven. He worked in the <i>Tuam Herald </i>before
leaving for Dublin in 1900, where Maureen was born in<i> </i>1913, one of four
surviving children. This talk will attempt to set her<i> </i>relentless drive,
which brought her to the seat of power in Dáil Éireann<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>in 1954, in context with regard to the
profound influence her Galway born father had on her.<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Dr. Micheline Sheehy-Skeffington will talk about her
grandmother, Hanna Sheehy-Skeffington who was a feminist, socialist,
nationalist and pacifist. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">On marriage, Hanna Sheehy and Francis Skeffington each
took each<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>other’s
name and both were very active in the early 20th century<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>campaigning for women’s suffrage.
Hanna co-founded the Irish<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>Women’s Franchise League and was jailed twice for suffrage
actions<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>and
went on hunger strike there. After Francis was murdered by a British<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>army officer
during Easter Week 1916, Hanna embarked on an 18-month tour of the US to tell
the truth about British brutality in Ireland<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>and campaign for Irish independence.
She was the only Irish activist to<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>meet with President Wilson.<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Meanwhile,
<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Alison Titley will speak about Irish
Women Artists in Tuam. </span></span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The women who exhibited in the Tuam Art Club
Exhibitions 1943-1959<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>included local amateur artists, members of the Galway Art Club
and<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>well
known Irish artists with both national and international<span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>reputations. Many of them were
pioneers and were well-known for their </span></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">struggle to gain recognition and
inclusion in modern art in Ireland.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">The final
lecture of the day will be by <span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Dr. John
Cunningham who has an intriguing title for his lecture: <i>“Don't iron while
the strike is hot!” exiled</i></span> <i>Irishwomen and the fight for workers'
rights.<b> </b></i><span style="mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">John will talk
about the </span></span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">high
levels of emigration from Ireland in the Famine and post-Famine<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>periods meant that many pioneering
Irishwomen made their<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>contribution
outside their native country. His paper will focus on three<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>such women who played dynamic roles
in early labour unions.<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>Roscommon-born
Kate Mullany (<i>c.</i>1838-1906) sailed to America with<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>her family in 1850, finding employment in the collar-making
industry<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>in Troy, New York. There,
in 1864, she established the Collar Laundry<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>Union, considered to be the first women’s trade union in the
United<span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold;"> </span>States. Another Famine
emigrant to North America was Cork-born Mary </span></span><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Harris (1837-1930), known as Mother
Jones, who is remembered as an organiser for the United Mineworkers Union, and
as a founder of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Also associated with
the IWW was Wexford-born Mary Fitzgerald, </span><i style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">née </i><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Sinnott (1882-1960),
publisher of labour newspapers, feminist and militant trade unionist, and the
first woman to be elected to public office in South Africa.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">There will also be a display by the

Steve's talk is </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333;">entitled ‘The 1798 United Irishman Rebellion in Co Galway and its aftermath’ (Marking 220 years since the Year of the French).</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #212121; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #212121;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /><span style="color: black;">For eighteenth months the county had experienced unprecedented unrest as some sought to free Ireland from sectarian and divisive rule. This talk traces that period. Steve will also guide on the use of eighteenth century newspapers as a source for the century.</span> </span></div>

workhouse is an infamous institution in Ireland. Hated, feared and reviled for
the role it played during the Irish Famine, these buildings became potent
symbols of the failure of British rule in Ireland. The ‘odious and degrading’
poor law system was one of the first parts of the old government system that
was reformed in the first years of the new state. This talk will explore the
evolution of the workhouse and the popular attitudes to it, which showed a
desire for reform rather than replacement and why these reforms led to the
foundation of other institutions.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: #fdfdfd; color: #333333;">Our guest lecturer is Dr Aoife Bhreatnach, an independent scholar researching the
cultural history of Irish garrison towns. A graduate of University College
Cork, with a PhD from DeMontfort University and subsequent book, <i>Becoming
Conspicuous: Irish Travellers, Society and the State</i> published in 2006 (UCD
Press). From 2003-04, she held the Irish Government Senior Scholarship at
Hertford College, Oxford and taught at the University of Warwick. A recipient
of an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences
Post-Doctoral Fellowship from 2004-06, she worked in NUI Maynooth developing a
theory of class in nineteenth-century Ireland. From this research emerged her
interest in the role played by the British military in Irish social history.
She blogs on irishgarrisontowns.com and tweets as @GarrisonTowns.</span></span></div>
